Introduction to Handbuilding

This 6-week Introduction to Handbuilding series is a terrific opportunity to learn the ancient pottery technique that involves creating forms using hands, fingers and simple tools, instead of using te pottery wheel. Students will become famililar with the basic methods of construction, decoration, vocabulary, as well as simple sculptural techniques. Demonstrations will include slab technique, pinch technique and coil technique. Projects will focus on basic planning and design with an emphasis on form and function.

With more than 30 years teaching experience, teaching artist, John Smollenski, is able to adapt the class sessions to the interests and skill levels of participating students. Students are encouraged to attend Clay Open Studio for free during the 6 weeks to practice these techniques  and work on their projects.
